Martyr Mages - Advice

So I have seen multiple threads about "Martyr Mages." What is a martyr mage...a life magic mage?

How does he go about attacking, and does he use any other magic skills besides life, critter and item?

I would like to make one, but want to be able to have him fight effectively.

Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreaciated.
