It's not until I started a war mage for some start-from-scratch fun that I realised what's going on with wands. As a void mage, my character's been stuck with the same wand for... well about forever, maybe 100 levels. They just don't turn up, nice void wands. But in every pile of loot, there it is, the trusty war-specific wand.
I hadn't noticed before that war wands have specialised attack types on them, acid, blade etc. And I think that's what's going on the loot. Void wands are treated as one of the options, that's to say it's like being say just an acid war mage, the rarity of a void wand is about the same as one specific war wand.
I can now see the point of tinkering - if you're getting semi-decent wands in every dozen kills you can afford to muck about with risking losing them.
Well, I don't say make void wands the same frequency as war wands, but balance a little please!
