The term "tough game" play has been over used many times for this game. There are nuances between "tough" and just plain "bad" game design.
Many players solo off static spawns. There are a few notable areas where you can boringly kill the same 1-2 mobs in a single location. Others choose to hunt mobs below their level and just slaughter away without much challenge. Certain classes (those with def boosts) usually become nearly immune to death and hack down easy mobs.
There are also those that enjoy the tougher aspect, and instead of being rewarded the game dumps on this style of game play. Whether it's a Shreth, Elemental Pets, Invoker Pets, or Soul Defractor, players can gain a substantial boost from both a Soul Defractor & Curio.
If you try camp high spawn areas it can be difficult. You deal with a lot of random spawn, but it's actually a small challenge in the game and a lot funner than camping a single mob or pulling single mobs all over the map. While pulling single mobs is safe and you can keep your bonus items a lot longer it's also non challenging and boring as sh#%T.
The 5 hour timer on Curio and 3 on Soul Defractor just reward people for playing lame. They should be considerably lowered.
Pet classes are also dysfunctional without these items. When they are active the game play runs much smoother and functions correctly. When they are not active the pets do not hold aggro correctly and they take significantly more dmg resulting in needless downtime.
The overall combat hp/regen should be higher for all classes as well. Parties have almost zero downtime. It runs fairly smooth and there is a constant flow of activity. Solo game play does not need to be much different.
These are not to make the game easier, but to make it better. Hunting high concentration areas with better mechanics will always be more challenging than slowly knit picking mobs more safely.
