I've been back about a week now. Doing the usual returnee thing... making alts like mad and dabbling a little bit everywhere. But I couldn't settle on what to make a main. It isn't that I wasn't finding anything good, but rather there were choices enough to inflict a moderate amount of indecision.
But today? My random alt-rolling dug up something that seems like it might do it for me. It's odd enough as to probably be uncommon, yet seems like it could actually be functional, unlike my usual fare.
I'd been running about with an Atlatl. I'd gotten alchemy too, so I could dabble with phials. And it was not panning out. Ever throw an imperil phial, then switch to an atlatl? It took so bloody long that whatever drudge I'd vulned at range was able to light a cigarette, stroll over, peruse the A section of the local Drudge Times, fill in the crossword puzzle, work on his online butt scratching degree, and comb the entire hectare of delectable bugs before I'd have that atlatl armed.
Functional, but slow and annoying. Dejectedly, I wondered up to the ranged merchant in holt. I figured I'd probably do better buying stacks of throwing axes. I didn't like this much, because I don't remember ever seeing bigger and better throwing weapons.
Then I see it: Under the fletching thing. A new something. Some kind of bolt. It's not arrowshafts. It's not boltshafts. It isn't even atlatlshafts. The heck is that thing? I buy one and an arrowhead and combine them to see. Craftable throwing weapons! Not only that, but these things got some teeth to them, man! And you can use them with a shield! And swapping between them and phials, while not MA quick, is still decent!
Suddenly, joy.

I rerolled and built specifically for this, and was just about set up with an initial array of throwing spikes before I noticed the time and realized I had to office with a quickness.
But, it'll be there for when I get home. A mad lugian with a backpack full of lethal spikes and dangerous vials.

Ready to take on the world.
And just that quick, AC gives me a reason to love it all over again.
