I feel that the tutorial presented to most players is far to long to learn the basics of character control and item management. Some new players may not have the patience to read all the text of npcs and pop ups and just want to run through attack some mobs, pick up some loot, then jump out into the world. (Log in, equip weapon, enter room, kill mob, loot key, unlock door, speak to npc)
Or to simplify the tutorial even more, Remove Jonathan - Add EXIT PORTAL.
I have seen tutorials eat away new players in games before, Everquest and Anarchy Online. Who both offer a free to play model which brings you into the newbie isolation room where you must complete mundain tasks inorder to enter the virtual world. As usual there is a way out but usually a newbie is overwhelmed by the game to see the quick escape.
Leading back, in these previously stated games I have created new characters many times and chatted amoungst the brand new players, helped them figure out the tutorial but the majority do not respond and sit/log out.
The mentality of isolating newbies into a tutorial without any initial contact with the virtual world I feel is a modern approach and unrealistic. We as people learn from the world we are brought into by experiencing its many details over time, not packaged in some mundane tutorial. A virtual world might benefit from a similiar approach.
This being said the original tutorial was excellent. Players appeared in the starter outpost of their decision and from this point could choose to enter the portal in front of them, clearly labeled academy training ground etc, or turn left and explore a seemingly endless landscape. I also believe this would be a great way for the community to come together and assist players coming into town from a fresh start, re-enforcing the Patron mentality and revitalizing the spirit of Asheron's Call.
To Devs - Thank you for continuing to support the community, happy hunting and safe travels
-To players - ISO Max'd XBOW DOUBLE LEGENDARY/BT PST
